BCB & Associates: FLIPSIDE
The Brief
Concerned that the number of students taking science and engineering at GCSE were in decline, the IET wanted a publication that would stimulate interest in the field, aimed at 11-15 -year-olds.
The Challenge
To create and produce a magazine that wouldn't smell of the classroom laboratory, to get right away from Bunsen burners and white-coated boffins and get kids reading about science and technology by presenting hi-tech, blistering content with the right language and tone-of-voice for the audience.
Editorial Response
Flipside is an 84pp colour magazine, produced eight times a year. Multiple copies are distributed to the libraries of more than 5000 UK secondary schools. Now in its third year of publication it continues to explore science and technology issues in a bold and engaging way.
Results
The response from the client, teachers, research focus groups and, most importantly, the readers, has been consistently enthusiastic and supportive. The breadth of content, the clarity of design and the magazine's humour are particularly appreciated. Readership stands at 300,000.
